Since I have a virtual phone number that works over my messaging account, I've been thinking about super silly things to do since I have data I can monitor and play with.
- Computing how much time I've spent on a call in a month and showing it in my about page
- Recording the number of messages I've sent and received over the same period.
- Showing if I am actively in a call or was just in one within a five-minute window.
It's meant to be mainly something for me to tinker with and learn more about the XMPP APIs (as well as finding a way to bridge them to Micropub, so it should be fun!
This does get me interested in my slow progression (and eventual documentation) of a libre form of these commercial services. XMPP + jmp.chat = iMessage/Google Messages RCM-esque (WhatsApp?) is one angle. I need to sit down and think about DAV stuff; Nextcloud is great but I think I went a bit too wild with my setup, lol. Note taking - a joke, lol. Piping everything through XMPP is probably going to be ideal for me.
This XEP (XEP-0174) technically should make XMPP work over Bluetooth networks. I'm curious if anyone's ever attempted to implement this.
I think I might eventually set up my own instance of Snikket. I have an XMPP account over with https://movim.eu/ but no one really messages me using it. Self-hosting it allows me to bridge my communications, at least, so I'm using the protocol more.
